چکیده

Knowledge of the position and the material conditions, e.g. the temperature, of the plates during hot rolling is important for process control. In fact, a precise material tracking system may help to prevent problems during the production process. This paper deals with the tracking of the rotation of heavy plates before and after the lateral expansion phase. The presented approach estimates the orientation and the position of the plate moving on the roller table. Images captured by a thermographic camera are utilized to identify the edges of the plate within the field of view. The detected edges are fed into an optimization-based estimation of the angular and translational position of the plate. Measurements of a plate from an industrial rolling mill demonstrate that the proposed method is robust against disturbances from the harsh environment nearby the mill stand.

Feedforward control of lateral asymmetries in heavy-plate hot rolling using vision-based position estimation

This paper presents a feedforward control concept for lateral asymmetries in heavyplate hot rolling. A lateral off-center plate position generally entails asymmetric rolling forces, asymmetric mill stretch, and thus a wedge-shaped exit thickness that may cause a cambered plate contour and a rotatory motion of the plate. In this paper, a model of the mill stand and of the plate movement is prese...

Optimization-based estimator for the contour and movement of heavy plates in hot rolling

This paper deals with the estimation of the contour of heavy plates during the hot rolling process. Asymmetric rolling conditions lead to a non-rectangular contour. The reasons for this effect, e.g., temperature gradients or nonhomogeneous input thickness profiles, are hard to predict in a real rolling mill. Hence, feedforward compensation of these disturbances is difficult, whereas feedback co...

Application of Modified Slab Method in Asymmetrical Plate Rolling

In this paper, an analytical method based on Modified Slab Method of analysis is presented to study the asymmetrical rolling process due to difference in work rolls radii, rolls speeds and interface frictions. The shear force imposed on material along the contact region is considered to be a function of the frictional factor and the roll gap geometry. Elastic-plastic with linear work hardening ...

Optimization-based reduction of contour errors of heavy plates in hot rolling

This paper deals with the reduction of top view contour errors in the hot rolling process. Deviations between the actual plate contour and the desired shape may result from asymmetric rolling conditions caused by, e.g., temperature gradients or non-homogeneous input thickness profiles. Under real rolling conditions these disturbances are hard to predict and hence cannot be compensated in a feed...
